Louie Mamengo: The Grand Finale
It was worth the wait.
Everyone were anticipating, all excited for the finale show to start. Prior that, there were old 80’s videos played on the big screen. They were fashion shows showcasing early works of the featured designer. It speaks of the trend during that time. Loose coat and pants for men, women in dresses inspired by flight stewardess, wedding gowns with excellent silhouette and Parisian inspired clothes in glittery embroidery just to name a few. It makes you realize how fashion recycles itself, but one thing is obvious, no matter what era you were in as long as you made a mark you are an icon.
Joey Espino Jr, Executive Producer/ Director of Philippine Fashion Week opened the show with his story of the late, Louie Mamengo That’s when it became apparent how important and historical to the fashion industry this show would be. He narrated how he started as a stage director for Louie’s shows. He learned a lot from him about the industry and enjoyed working together. Joey shared his thoughts too on supporting each other, on working with what’s available, on striving and being perfect in an imperfect world.
Towards his last days they were still partners in crime, they were best friends after all. Louie requested for him to direct his final collection before he departed. Joey hesitant since he doesn’t direct anymore, he complied for a friend. Louie wants everyone to feel happy, too feel inspired after the show, it was nostalgic.
The collection is apt to be this years Holiday Collection grand finale. Every piece is well crafted, tailored at its finest. It was Parisian inspired and the clothes really look classy and expensive. The whole collection is dominated by black in different fabrics and textures. There were also minimal plaids and highlight of the show is a red velvet gown with a small trail and of course the classy white wedding gown.
I am glad I was part of this tribute to one of the industry’s finest, true artist that paved the way towards new generation of outstanding Filipino fashion designers.
Hats off to you Louie…
